This is home to the majestic Cat, the tiger, sightings of which are as rare as its gets.
 Once a thriving tiger jungle, the count of tigers is rumored to be less than 50! Though efforts are underway to protect this beast, difficulties spring up in the form of poachers, who are aided by locals. The actual Tiger Reserve is spread over an area of 1319 sq km and includes the Corbett National Park, Kalagarh Reserve Forest and Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary. Of course, only close to 25% of the reserve is open to the public, the rest remaining out of reach to safeguard their natural habitat. What renders it an even more mysterious air is the fact that none of the roads have been laid down or repaired, so what you actually travel through is the real jungle!
 Common sightings here include barking deer, spotted deer, elephants, boars, leaopards and kingfisher and serpent eagles. Named in honour of late Jim Corbett, the legendary hunter-turned-naturalist, the park is essentially savannah grasslands. Roam on a jeep or atop an elephant and hire the services of a guide trained to hear and decipher the right sounds. An ideal weekend getaway from Delhi, carry your binoculars and your sense of adventure and you just might glimpse the elusive animal!

 <td valign="top" class="body-text">Visitors are required to reach the gates of the park early enough to complete the necessary requirements. Entry permits can be bought at Dhangarhi gate for Dikhla and at Amdanda gate for day trips to Birjani. In the off-season (monsoon) you can only enter through the Jhirna gate. Fishing permits can be obtained at the reception centre. All tourists visiting the park are required to obtain permits for entry into the park, from the park administration centre at Ramnagar.</td>

		Wildlife Attractions: Home to the elusive Big Cat, the reserve is still the best place to catch a glimpse of the beast. And even if you miss it, you would still get to see different species of spotted and barking deer, chital, sambar and elephants.
 
 
 The best way to explore the grasslands is on a jeep safari, accompanied by an expert guide. Drive through the thick and quiet jungles, visit the waterholes, discover pug marks and trees scratched by tigers and catch an occasional sight of the sloth bears and other mammals in the jungle. There are also over 600 species of birds and various reptiles. While traversing the depths of the jungle, keep in mind that you should not step out of the jeep, wear loud colours and perfumes and litter the jungles with trash. Of course a must is a good pair of binoculars and your spirit of adventure and thrill! 
 For those looking to connect more deeply, elephants are an alternate mode of exploring the reserve. Bookings for these can be made at the Forest Department. 
		 Bird Sightings: Home to over 580 varieties of avifauna, Corbett National Park constitutes as an ornithologist's paradise. The varieties include the Darter, Herons, White-Necked & Black-Necked Storks, the Fishing Eagle, Hornbills, Parakeets, Wire-Tailed Swallows, the Crested Honey Buzzard, Booted Hawk Eagle and the White-Crested Khalij Pheasant. Among the night birds are Spotted Owlet, Fish Owls, Jungle Nightjar, the Franklin's Nightjar, the Stone Curlew and the Great Stone Plover. 
 Fishing: Angling and fishing is generally allowed in the Ramganga and Kosi Rivers outside the boundaries of the park. Remember to obtain the required permit for this from the Project Tiger office in Ramnagar and if you get lucky you just carry your prize catch - a mahaseer or a catfish! 
 River Rafting: Rafting enthusiasts visit Corbett during the monsoon, when the park is closed but the Kosi River is overflowing with water. Most resorts also organize rafting activities, as well as river crossing, rappelling and rock climbing. 
 Kaladhungi Museum: Located 34 kms from Ramnagar, Jim Corbett's bungalow is today a museum, showcasing his fine collection of rifle cases, hats, fishing nets, photographs and letters. In the garden of this house are the graves of his two dogs. Also, visit the Corbett Waterfall, which gushes down 20 ft and is located just 3 km away. 
 Garjiya: Located 14 kms from Ramnagar, it derives its name from the Garjiya Devi Temple, situated over a huge rock over the Kosi River. This temple is visited by a huge number of pilgrims, especially on Kartik Purnima night. </td>

The restaurant at the Infinity Resorts overlooks the river and serves a wide variety of multi cuisine dishes. Govind Restaurant in Ramnagar serves vegetarian cuisine and their eggplant specialties are a must-try! A word of caution though - non-vegetarian food and alcohol are strictly prohibited within the park premises. </td>

	The first National Park to be established in India, Corbett owes its name and origin to Colonel Edward James Corbett. An extraordinary man, he was a hunter-cum-naturalist-cum-writer-cum-thinker-cum-conservationist. His popularity with the locals of Kumaon earned him the nickname 'Carpet Sahib'.
 
 
 Born into an English family, his early life was governed by a passion for hunting and fishing and later to game photography. His extraordinary knowledge of the Kumaon region rises from years of traversing the terrain. He is credited with having written books like Man-eaters of Kumaon, The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag, The Temple Tiger and More Man-eaters of Kumaon. 
 He moved to Kenya after India's independence to lead wildlife safari expeditions. He played host to Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth when they stayed at Treetops, a luxury machan that he owned, on the night King George VI died. He is believed to have written, â€œFor the first time in the history of the world a young girl climbed into a tree one day a Princess, and climbed down from the tree the next day a Queen."
 Jim Corbett died of a heart attack post his book Tree Tops and was laid to rest at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Nyeri. However, the park that he helped create and dedicated his life to continues to carry memories of this great conservationist.</td>
