Things to See
  • Pushkar Lake: This is the centerpoint of all activities in Pushkar. Legend has it that the lake was created when Lord Brahma dropped a lotus petal on the site. A Brahma temple, the only in the country, is a popular place of pilgrimage here. The holy lake is flanked by 52 ghats where pilgrims come for a holy dip. Also, 500 temples and 52 palaces surround this lake.

  • Brahma Temple: This is the most revered temple in Pushkar, being the only temple in the country dedicated to the Lord. Legends believe that Brahma performed a yajna here. The temple is marked by a red sphere and the entrance gateway has a Hans or goose, Brahma’s vehicle.

  • Varah Temple: This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and houses an image of Vishnu as his incarnation of a wild boar.

  • Savitri Temple: This temple is dedicated to Godess Savitri, Brahma's wife. It is located on the highest hill in Pushkar and is accessible by a long flight of stairs. Catch a panoramic view of the Pushkar Lake and sand dunes from the top of this hill.

  • Rangji Temple: Rangji or Ranganatha temple is known for its typical south Indian style of architecture. The temple has an image of Lord Vishnu. It’s gopuram and pillars are crafted in gold as a mythical bird.

  • Pushkar Camel Fair: Pushkar is best known for its cattle fair, the largest of its kind, which is hosted in the month of October or November. During this time, camels are bought, sold, drecked up and raced. The fair witnesses villagers coming from all parts of the state. The evenings witness folkdances and dramas. The market set up at this time also offers vibrant Rajasthani costumes, jewellery, embroidered fabrics and tiny trinkets.
