Almost synonymous to the Guruvayurappan Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, the place is revered by all Hindus across the country. The town bustles with Krishna devotees throughout the year. The temple is indeed beautiful and bright murals depicting Krishna’s life cover the entire walls. Its wonderful to see devotees spending hours in queues just to catch a glimpse of their lord. The culture and tradition of the town makes it a good place to visit with your family. Get the kids acquainted with our religion and culture. There are other entertainment opportunities too. waterfalls and streams around the town make for good picnic spots. The place lacks the noise and pollution of big cities and hence makes for an ideal getaway.
 
Things to See
  • Guruvayurappan Temple: Dedicated to Lord Krishna, this temple is the hub of all activities in Guruvayoor. The lord is worshipped in several manifestations here, most important being the Infant Krishna. The idol of the lord is built in a rare stone called Patala Anjana and is shown with four arms bearing a conch, discus, mace and lotus. The idol is decorated with tulsi leaves, rose garlands and pearl necklaces. Watch out for the roof and two doors within the temple that are covered in gold. A highlight of this temple is the 13-tiered Deepastambam, which is extremely magnificent when lit up every evening. Other idols present in the temple are those of Lord Ganesha, Lord Ayappa and Goddess Durga. The temple is a popular site for feeding the first rice to a child.

  • Punnathur Kotta: Once the palace of the local ruler, today it is famous for the Elephant Sanctuary, where elephants ate trained for temple purposes. The sanctuary houses over 50 elephants, all donated by devotees of the Lord. Special events observed here include the Gajapooja (elephant worshipping) and Anayoottu (elephant feeding).

  • Guruvayoor Mural Institute: Located close to the main temple, this mural institute lets you observe the art gallery, purchase paintings and watch students at work.

  • Devaswom Museum: This museum houses an interesting collection of offerings made to the lord, including toy planes, house models, flute and a rifle.

 
Gourmet Treats
There are a number of eating joints near the temple serving mostly vegetarian meals cooked in South Indian style. Popularly visited are the Ramakrishna Lunch Home, the Indian Coffee House and the Annaporna Vegetarian Restaurant. You must try out the South Indian dishes of avail, olan and the sweet payasam. North Indian and continental cuisines are available at Rugmini Regency, Krishna Inn and Sopana Heritage, which start business after 7 am. A truly unique ritual is held at the temple itself, which provides a daily prasadam to over a thousand people. While the everday meals at the temple are standard Kerala dishes, on auspicious occasions and festivals, an elaborate meal is provided.
 
Shopping Fiesta
No major shopping items except religious paraphernalia. Visit the East Nada and West Nada for pictures and idols of Guruvayurappan, rings with this image and religious audio-visuals. Oil lamps made in brass and bell metals are other popular items here. South Indian garments are also available. The Khadi Gramadyog Bhawan provides rudraksha beads and religious books, which can also be bought from around the temple..
