Things to See
  • Mysore Palace (Ambavilas Palace): Home to the royal family of Wodeyars the palace is an architectural wonder which blends Hindu, Muslim, Rajput, and Gothic styles of architecture. Built in fine gray granite and deep pink marble, it is one of the richest palaces in the world. The palace with its many marvels houses the famous golden throne which weighs around 200 kgs. The opulent Ambavilas Hall is the most spectacular room of the palace. The interiors are ornately done with semi-precious stones. The Gombe Thotti or the Doll’s Pavilion holds a fine collection of Indian and foreign dolls. The Kalyana Mantapa or nuptials hall is a marvel with a multi-hued stained glass ceiling and peacock motifs. The palace includes twelve Hindu temples and an armory which has a collection of arms used by the royalty. The palace should be visited after it gets dark as it gains an enchanting look when illuminated by thousands of light bulbs.

  • Brindavan Gardens: One of the most famous gardens in South India, Brindavan Garden is particularly famous for its illuminated musical fountains. These gardens are laid on the banks of the River Cauvery near the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam. The garden gives out a spectacular sight after dark when the fountains present an enchanting blend of brilliant colors, illumination and vibrant music. Watching the musical fountains can be a new experience for the kids.

  • Chamundi Hills: The hills are known for the temple of Goddess Chamundeshwari, the local goddess. The temple is said to have a gold idol of the deity. The hill offers a panoramic view of the entire city and is frequented by tourists.

  • St. Philomena’s Church: Famed as one of the largest churches in India, it was laid by a Wodeyar ruler of Mysore. Built in Neo-Gothic style the structure is impressive with lofty towers and stained glass windows. The church is believed to have preserved the relics of the saint.

  • Mysore Zoo: One of the oldest zoos in the world, it is yet another attraction in the city. The zoo houses a large variety of animals – Indian animals and from around the world. A sure delight for the kids, the Karanji Lake is also located inside the zoo.

Gourmet Treats
Mysore, which attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world, is known for its fusion food which combines local cuisines with world cuisine. Most of Mysore cuisine is rice based and most of the restaurants serve these dishes at reasonable rates. The best place to sample a Masala Dosa is the Gardenia Restaurant which serves Chinese and Continental as well. If you are on a look out for a pure vegetarian fare then head on to Indra Café. They help you end your meals with a deliciously stuffed Masala Paan. The Roost Restaurant in the outskirts is a nice place to hangout. A multi-cuisine restaurant it even has a full-fledged bar. And Mysore should never be left without sampling the famous Mysore Pak, a sweet made of gram flour and first created in the kitchen of the royals.
