Festive Celebrations

One of the most popular festivals celebrated in Aizawl is the Chapchar Kut or Spring Festival. The festival is held at the end of February, as a symbol of the end of winter and advent of spring. During the celebrations, the locals dress up in their colourful attires and jewellery and get together for a session of traditional singing and dancing to the accompaniment of drumbeats, cymbals and gongs. Among the several kinds of dances that are performed, the most popular one is the Bamboo Dance, performed with the help of long bamboo sticks. The other major dances include Khuallam, Chheihlam, Chai and Sarlamkai. These dances are generally accompanied by a feasting session. Also held during this time is a Flower Show, Food Festival, Music Competition and traditional games. Also celebrated with great fervour is Mim Kut in August, also known as Maize Festival. Prayers are offered to ancestors, who are said to visit the homes and give blessings. Offerings during this festival include freshly harvested maize, vegetables, bread and bead necklaces. Feasting, especially on rice beer, and dances, including ballet performances are also common events. Also celebrated greatly is Thalfavang Kut Festival in November. This festival is possibly the best chance to watch the spectacular tribal cultural performances, which are performed by the tribes scattered all over Mizoram. Celebrated as thanksgiving to God, Pawl Kut consists of great feasting with delicacies prepared by the womenfolk. One of the most important elements in this festival is the lavish meal consisting of meat and egg. Also visit Mizoram during the Christmas celebrations when all houses decorate the beautiful Christmas trees with lights, balls, bells and stars. Preparations begin almost a month in advance and the churches in the region are decorated beautifully.
