What to See

Vantawng Water Falls: These falls are the largest in Mizoram and located 137 kms from Aizawl. Almost entirely surrounded by bamboo forests, these falls present a spectacular sight as they gush down 750 feet.

Phawngpui: Located at a distance of 229 kms from Aizawl, Phawngpui or the Blue Mountain is believed to be the abode of Gods and is the highest mountain peak in Mizoram. Trek up to the peak where you would find a wide variety of bamboo groves, orchids and rhododendrons. Also visible are several species of butterflies.

Lunglei: Located about 235 kms from Aizawl, Lunglei is one of the most inhabited areas in Mizoram. Also called Lungleh, this place derives its name from a bridge like rock found here. The second largest town in Mizoram, there is a hall here, which hosts several cultural events and concerts. The hall also has a museum where local artists display their arts and creations. This town also derives its fame from the rare image of Buddha, which has etchings of dancing girls at the sides, found at the Mualchung village.

Mizoram State Museum: Located in the city centre, this museum provides an interesting insight into the Mizo culture, traditions and history. Popular displays here include traditional Mizo costumes, implements and historic relics.

Champhai: Located about 192 kms from Aizawl, Champhai is a trekker's paradise owing to the hills that abound with rhododendrons. Also located close to this is Ruantlang where you can still watch the traditional Mizo way of life.

Pukzing Cave: Almost 25-mts wide, this is said to be the biggest cave in the area. Legend has it that this cave was carved out by a man called Mualzavata, using a hairpin!

Palak Lake: Located in a scenic spot, the lake abounds in a large variety of aquatic birds and wild duck of several species. Fishes and crabs are also found in the lake and the forest area that bounds it is apt for sighting bears, tigers, deer and wild pigs.

Tamdil Lake: Located almost 60 kms from Aizawl, Tamdil Lake is the largest lake here. Also known for its fishing options, this lake is especially popular with families looking for a relaxing picnic spot. Popular aquatic species in the lake including prawns.

Bara Bazaar: This is the main shopping centre of the town, known for its abundance of stalls and cafés. Watch the locals dressed in their traditional best selling products including woolens, bamboo wares and river crabs in tiny wicker baskets.

Weaving Centre: This is the best place to watch the local women busy in weaving traditional shawls in a variety of colours and designs. Shawls are also available for purchase here.

Luangmual Handicrafts Centre: Located about 7 kms from Aizawl, this centre is famed for its traditional Khumbeu bamboo hats and shawls available for sale.
