Festive Celebrations
The most popular festival celebrated in Almora is the Nanda Devi Festival, dedicated to Goddess Nanda, the patron goddess of the Chand dynasty. During this festival the temple is visited by over several thousand people who offer prayers to the goddess and seek her blessings. Celebrated with equal pomp is Dusshera in October. This festival is attended by a huge number of devotees and effigies of Ravana and other demons are burned, as a symbol of victory of good over evil. Located close to Almora, the Uttraini Festival is celebrated for a week at Bageshwar in January. Also close to the town, Jageshwar is the site of the Jageshwar Monsoon Festival held between July and August at the temples in the town for a month.
