Shopping Delights
Almora lacks the swanky shopping malls, and the numerous bazaars that line the Mall area provide a thrilling opportunity to pick some Kumaoni wares. Especially interesting would be to visit the centuries-old Lal Bazaar, which still has shops that are probably as old as the town. Lala Bazaar offers a more thrilling session with their old door and windows and wooden carved frames. This is the main area that stocks up on everything, from clothes to daily goods and restaurants. Check out some of the copperware that Almora is famous for - tiny diyas, bangles and utensils and images of gods and goddesses, available at the Tamta Mohalla. Other popular Almora shopping areas are Thana and Johari Bazaar, where you can pick up Pashmina Shawls and Angora cloth (made of the fur of Angora rabbits). Stop by at the Khadi Village Industries that stocks up on shawls in several pastel shades of orange, brown and lavender, as well as kurtas, warm jackets and fabrics. And of course, when going back, pick up a box of bal mithai and khoya singhora each - these are popular take-homes!
