Festive Celebrations

Ashokashtami is one of the most important celebrations here dedicated to Lord Shiva. During this, the image of Lingaraja and other deities are taken in a procession from the Lingaraja Temple to the Rameshwara Temple. This festival is attended by hundreds of devotees who join together and pull the chariot that carries the deities. The deities remain in the temple for four days, after which they are carried back to Lingaraja Temple.

Celebrated by the tribal community in the end of January, Adivasi Mela holds a wide display of arts and artifacts created by the tribal, and is an excellent opportunity to experience the culture and tradition of them. One of the most vibrant festivals is Durga Puja, celebrated in worship to Goddess Durga. The festival takes place in September or October and idols of the goddess are created and decorated with lights, flowers and jewellery. Preparations start weeks ahead and the entire community comes together to enjoy in the festive spirit. The ceremony continues for 10 days, culminating with the immersion ceremony on the last day. The images are taken in a huge procession to the nearest river or tank and are immersed to the accompaniment of loud devotional music. Also celebrated with great splendor is Janmashtami, dedicated to Lord Krishna. This festival is marked by people observing day-long fasts and finally celebrating the birth of the Lord at midnight.
