Shopping Delights
Bhubaneswar is known for its typical Oriya handicrafts and fabrics, available at all major stores. Typical to the region, the ikkat saris and kurtas are particularly favourite. Hand-woven and available in a whole range of bright colours, they are best available at Priyadarshini Odissi Handloom and Kalaniketan. Another great buy when it comes to textiles is the appliqué work, locally known as Chandua. Sambalpuri silk and cotton, tussar silk and gold embroidery are other materials that must be taken home.
The stone-carvings are especially famous here. They are available in a range of artifacts including idols, stone utensils and table-lamps. For these, head out to State Handicrafts Emporium Utkalika and the temple complex. Horn articles, crafted as combs, penstands and decorative pieces are other take-homes. Close to Bhubaneswar, the village of Pipli is known for its appliqué work done in bright colours on bedcovers, umbrellas and cushion sets. Bhubaneswar's signature art is the tarakash, which are unique designs done by thin wires of silver. Shops at Naya Sadak and Balu Bazaar are known for these. Also check out the beautiful pattachitras and paintings done of palm leaves.
