Festive Celebrations
Bhopal Mahotsav is organized By M.P. Tourism in collaboration with the M.P. State Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd. Celebrated in the month of January/February at Gohar Mahal, it features a Food Festival, Craft Fair, and cultural performances by tribal artistes. The fair comes alive with potters workshops, folk music and dance, and open-air plays.
Ijtima is a three-day religious congregation held at the Taj-ul-Masjid annually. It draws scores at Muslim pilgrims from all parts of India. Diwali is another popular featival, celebrated by people visiting each others houses and bursting crackers with great fervour. Gifts and sweets are mutually exchanged and donations made to the poor.
Similar to this, Eid is celebrated by both Muslims and Hindus, who visit each others houses and treat themselves to the delicacy Sewai sweet. During Ganesha Utsav and Durga Pooja, idols of the god and goddess are established in beautiful pandals and bright jhankis are carried out. At the final day of Dussera, huge effigies of Ravana are burnt in several parts of the city, thus signifying the victory of good over evil.
