Attractions
  • Fauna: The beasts that reside here are the park’s foremost attraction. Home to more than 400 rare Royal Bengal Tigers, the park is a major Tiger Reserve. The tigers here have adapted themselves to the environment and hence swim around and eat fish and crabs. Try spotting one swimming along your boat. The tigers are mostly harmless, unless troubled. Other creatures that find home here are fishing cats, macaques, foxes, and chital. The Mangrove Interpretation Centre here has watchtowers at Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, Netidhopan and Haldi for wildlife viewing.

  • Avifauna: A haven for bird watchers, the park also houses a variety of birds, including open billed storks, white ibis, water hens, white bellied sea eagles, seagulls, kingfishers and whistling teals. The Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary located between Peechkali and Gomti Rivers is the only place in the park where you can walk and spot a host of birds.

  • Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project: This is an excellent place to view and observe the mighty crocodiles. In fact you can also visit this project to view the breeding of estuarine crocodiles.

Must-Do
  • Boat Cruise: The best way to tour the park is to hire a boat that takes you around the park. Ordinary boats are available at many places. But if you need a special boat, you can hire one at Canning.

  • Canopy Walk: This is an excellent experience for touring through the lush mangroves south-west of the sanctuary, the only area in the reserve that can be toured on foot.

Dining

There are no stand-alone restaurants in Sunderbans and all eating options are the restaurants attached to the various hotels and resorts in the Park. One of the best options is the Sunderban Tiger Camp, which serves delicious meals in buffet style. It is mostly known for its fresh fish delicacies. The restaurant attached to the Sundar Chital Hotel is another good option to try out seafood delicacies and local specialties.
