Traveler's Note

Kanha is surely one of the easiest areas to spot wildlife, considering the rich and varied wildlife population it has. Among others, the park is credited with being the only home to the Barasingha or the multi-horned swamp deer. Other than these, the park is also home to a population of tigers, leopards, sloth bears, Indian wolves, gaurs, chitals, sambars and nilgai. The park has an attractive landscape with a horseshoe-shaped valley and meadows and grasslands dotting the entire expanse. Kanha is definitely an exciting hideaway in the wilds.

Best time for wildlife spotting – October-June
Operating months - Park is closed from July to mid-November

Attractions
  • Wildlife: As is true to any other wildlife reserve, the main attraction in Kanha is its wildlife. Other than tigers, the Barasingha remains the most important attraction here. Other animals that form a part of the Kanha family are porcupines, hyena, jungle cat and leopards. You’d also find a large species of deer including spotted deer and four-horned deer. Wolves can also be found here, though they are relatively difficult to spot.

  • Bamni Dadar or the Sunset Point: A beautiful spot in the park, it offers brilliant views of the sunset as well as the lush greenery of the area. The area is also known for its frequent sightings of Barasingha, sambar, barking deer, chausinga and gaur.

  • Kanha Museum: The museum inside the park called the Kanha Museum is another interesting place to visit while touring this park. The museum is helpful in understanding the topography and other interesting aspects of the park, including its various activities and the tribal culture of the surrounding region.

  • Raja and Rani: Raja and Rani are the names given to two giant sal trees in the park, believed to have survived here for 2000 years. There stumps are still there and are worshipped by devotees daily.

Must-Do
  • Tiger Show or Elephant Safari: Elephant rides are allowed only during the tiger show, which is conducted every morning. It is another way to explore the park and surely a more exciting one. Elephant safaris let you get a close view of the tiger and are said to be extremely adept at tiger-tracking.

  • Bird Watching: The park, which is home to more than 300 avian species is simply a bird watcher’s paradise. Take a guide along with you who can guide you to the buffer zone where these birds, both migratory and resident, are found in good numbers. Don’t forget to carry your cameras to capture these lovely sights.

Dining

At Kanha National park the interesting but adventurous eating options are the small roadside local restaurants (dhabas) at Khatia where some simple, local meals like dal-roti-sabji can be had. Other than these several restaurants are attached to the various hotels and resorts in the park. The best dining option amongst them is the restaurant at the Wild Chalet Resort. Here an array of excellent Indian Chinese and Continental dishes are served as well as barbeque options are arranged. The restaurant of the Baghira Log Huts is also a decent place to have meals. They serve Indian and Continental cuisines as well as barbeques. The Kanha Jungle Lodge also has a good restaurant and bar which serves good meals and beverages. The Celebration Van Vilas Resort has two restaurants, namely Kipling and Bamboo Jungle Restaurants. These serve breakfast and buffet meals.
