Thekkady is the main centre of fresh spices, so you can't possibly leave without packs of them. Available in the local markets are freshly packaged nutmeg, fenugreek, black and white pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, anise seeds and cloves. Among the better known shops for these are Hill Top, Kerala Spices, Cee Pee Spices and Indian Spices. Further ahead in Kumily, Spice Court and Crescent Spices also sell these neatly packed spices. Buy some local snacks like the famed banana chips fried in coconut oil and several varieties of tea. And of course, don't go without buying a Periyar Tiger Reserve t-shirts with images of elephants, birds and tigers.
