Festive Celebrations
Undoubtedly, one of the most important festivals is Durga Puja held for ten days. Marked by great revelries, huge and elaborate pandals are set up across the city and finely bedecked idols of the goddess are offered prayers. The Rath Fair is held for 7 days on the fairgrounds near the Chitralaya Theater. Highlight of this festival is the huge amount of handicrafts available for sale. Definitely a great place to go and get your hands on handicrafts and other buys. The Industrial Fair is held in November and includes a number of activities, programs and seminars held in the interest of the business traveler. Nabarun is a huge Puja held right beside the National Highway and is something you cannot miss. An especially good time to visit the city would be during Makar Sankranti in January. The nearby town of Jaidev holds musical programs performed by baul singers.
