Festive Celebrations
One of the most vibrant festivals is the Malabar Mahotsavam, held in the Mananchira Maidan between 13th and 16th January. The festival aims at boosting the cultural traditions of the region and features cultural dances and music, traditional folk arts, drama and literature. Interesting performances of traditional art form, like Theyyam and Kalarippayattu add colour to the occasion. Also interesting are the various cuisines and spectacular fireworks. Celebrated in March, the Pooram Festival is held at the Arakkal Temple and involves a spectacular parade of richly caparisoned elephants with bright umbrellas.
Held at Lokanarkavu Temple twice a year, the Pooram Festival showcases the Poorakkali, an unusual dance art dedicated to the God of Love, Kamadeva. An interesting feature of this festival is the absence of any singers or musical instruments; the dancers sing on their own and the rhythm is provided by the clapping of hands and movement of feet. Maruthukali, also held at this time, includes a scholarly debate on literature, grammar and mythology. The Utsavam at Sree Venkateswara Temple is celebrated for seven days and comprises of elephant processions, fairs and fireworks. Water-adventure enthusiasts would enjoy the Jalotsavam Festivals, which are organized during Onam and conducted by three local sports clubs.
