What to See
Jungle Safari: Wake up at the crack of dawn, and head out to the jungle for a thrilling round of animal watching. Book a jeep for the day which comes with an experienced driver and a guide. One of the best ways to explore the jungle is on an elephant, but you must book well in advance. Either spend your time moving through the tall grasses, or join the Tiger Show, where mahouts track down animals and then take you to the nearest point. But whatever you do, keep these in mind-wear muted and earthy shades, which let you blend with the region, don’t wear loud colours and perfumes and strictly no littering the land with rubbish.
Bandhavgarh Fort: This is one of oldest forts in India, discovered almost 2500 years back. Accessible by a sheer climb of almost an hour, this is the only region in the park where you are allowed to walk. Once you reach the top, you would find an idol of the reclining Vishnu on the seven-hooded snake-Shesh Shaiya, located in a pool of green water, which is also the source of the Charanganga River. As you continue your walk, you would come across idols of Vishnu’s 10 avatars. Also visit the three small 12th century temples. The natural ramparts of the fort afford a spectacular view of the surrounding region.
Caves: The Park houses almost 35 sandstone caves that bear Brahmi inscriptions.
Baghel Museum: This museum still houses Mohan, the white tiger (now stuffed and mounted) that was captured by Maharaja Martand Singh.
Open from: 10.00 am-4.00 pm
Bhamera Dam: This is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of birds.
