What to See
Sun temple: This prominent 13th century temple is dedicated to the Sun God and is why Konark is so famous all over the world. Built by King Narsimhadeva I the Sun temple is among the most magnificent monuments in India. The temple was constructed in a way to portray a chariot with pillars and wheels and was completed in 1250 AD. The wheels of the chariot are exact sun dials and serve as inspiration to modern time pieces. Located by the banks of the Chandrabhaga river, the Sun temple is a glorious symbol of Oriyan architecture and perfectly the craftsmanship of the erstwhile artisans.
Ramachandi temple: Situated by the banks of the Kusabhadra river, the Ramachandi temple is another must-visit jewel in Konark. The residing deity of this temple is Goddess Ramchandi and the temple in itself is a major landmark in the city. Surrounded by natural beauty and charm, the temple complex is a great picnic spot, as well.
Konark beach: Flaunting azure waters and pristine sand, Konark beach is the perfect spot to spend a lazy evening at. The beach gets even more beautiful and enigmatic during sunset and sunrise. You can indulge in some fun and relaxing beach activities like beach games and swimming, and just spend some time in peace and quiet.
Kuruma: Kuruma is a Buddhist site located a short distance away from the Sun temple. It is an important archaeological site in India and was mentioned in many Buddhist texts from Ceylon and Asoka. Kuruma was founded between the 8th and 9th century AD and is the perfect place to explore the history and religion of India.
Archaeological museum: The Archaeological museum was established in 1968 with an aim to house the sculptures and other ruins of the Sun temple. Displayed in 4 different galleries are the artefacts, manuscripts, paintings and sculptures from the Konark Sun temple.
Astranga: Located around 19 km from Konark, Astrang is a fishing village that is an excellent picnic spot. This is a lovely place for photos and photographers can capture the multi-coloured hues of the sunsets here.
