Mahabaleshwara temple: This temple is one of the most sacred sites for Hindus in India. Devotees flock this temple to take the blessings of Lord Shiva and also to perform the last rites of their loved ones. The Mahabaleshwara temple features beautiful Dravidian architecture and a 1,500-year old Shiva idol. All through the day, and especially the evenings, the temple resonates with activity and prayers and aartis dedicated to Shiva.
Maha Ganpati temple: According to a local legend, it is necessary to visit the Maha Ganpati temple before you visit the Mahabaleshwara temple. This is because, according to the legend, Lord Ganesha succeeded to take the Atmalinga from Ravana, and thus, Lord Shiva bestowed on him the honour of the first worship.
Murudeshwar: A little way away from Gokarna, Murudeshwar is a town that is home to the second-tallest statue of Lord Shiva in India. Overlooking the marvellous Arabian Sea, the tower of the Murudeshwar temple rises to 249 ft, possibly the tallest in the world. The temple’s presiding deity is Sri Murudeshwara, a manifestation of Lord Shiva.
